“Windows Hello” Says Goodbye To Bad Face Recognition

Have you ever used a laptop that can log in with the web cam? It’s a cool concept. Instead of typing a password one can simply look into the camera for a brief second and they’re in.

In the past these systems have been quite poor.

I had a friend set up his laptop for this type of log in. And I made it a goal to try and break in. The system was actually poor enough that a picture of him (shown in front of the web cam) would do the trick. Of course it was smart enough to recognize one face from another, but this was an extremely simple hack.

“Windows Hello” is something that is being released on the coming Windows 10 OS (which I am super psyched about). This is an extremely polished version of the facial log in. The idea here is that the computer will quickly be able to realize who is using it and will log in accordingly, without sacrificing security. This system is integrating some of the technologies used in the Kinect. There are also finger print and iris scanner options.

I was actually watching a video on this and they mention the picture hack and how it does not work. That got me hooked. Apparently the camera uses inferred as well, which makes the face visible in all kinds of lighting.

Very cool stuff to look forward to very soon.
